RARE STUDDED, CARVED, AND WAX-DECORATED SAILOR’S BOX. Mid-19th century. The rectangular lid fitted with brass carrying handle and outlined with brass studs, chip-carved with scrolling leafy tendrils above a banner carved with the name “F.A. Clark”, all within a rectangular chip-carved border. The front with similar leafy sprigs flanked by anchors above five-pointed compass stars. The ends decorated with a central chip-carved pinwheel containing hearts and diamonds, each corner carved with a five-pointed compass star. The back faintly painted with the image of a fully rigged sailing ship, the box dovetailed. The carvings all filled with colored sealing wax. SIZE: 7″ h. x 12″ w. x 8″ d. PROVENANCE: Found in the Rockport, Maine area. CONDITION: In very good condition overall, with polished wax surfaces. Showing normal and nominal wear, the painting of ship faded. Lock absent.
