RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1840 MUSKET WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. 42” rnd bbl. Marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1842” vertically at rear of lockplate. The eagle over “US” is in front of cock. The 1842 date also appears on bbl tang, but there are no proof marks or inspector cartouches. There are multiple assembly marks on all parts, external and internal, but all appear to be orig. There is a brass number button on bottom of stock in front of trigger guard. The 18” triangular bayonet has concave top surface with “US” mark at base. The leather scabbard has buff frog and brass tip. CONDITION: Excellent overall. Only widely scattered specks of surface rust. Stock has minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Bayonet matches condition of gun. Scabbard has numerous surface cracks to finish on both scabbard and buff portion of frog. Tip has very dark patina. Edwards Collection 4-58430 FS118 (3,500-6,500)
