ROBERT SALMON (American, 1775-1858) “LUGGER IN A WIND”. Oil on cradled wood panel shows a three-mast vessel with sails up with sixteen crew members and flags flying off back masts. A small boat with sail down and three people is seen in foreground along with a beach, two men, small boat and anchor. Several other boats are seen at each side of lugger all against a backdrop of grass covered cliffs and mountains. Several people are seen atop coastal rocks. Signed and dated lower right “R Salmon 183?”. Old label affixed to back of cradle from the Museum of Fine Arts. The label is typed as follows: “Museum of Fine Arts TL 5390 Unframed Robert Salmon: Lugger in a Wind Lent by Mrs. George T. Francis for Photograph”. Housed in a period gilt gesso decorated frame. PROVENANCE: Collection of Mrs. George T. Francis, Philadelphia, PA. SIZE: 16-1/2” x 24-1/4”. CONDITION: There is an old horizontal angled crack through bottom 1/3, also consolidated paint cracks throughout with a stabilized crackle finish. 9-29942 (60,000-80,000)
