SCARCE 18TH CENTURY NEW ENGLAND MAHOGANY GRANDFATHER CLOCK BY JOHN BAILEY. Many of the Bailey family were makers of clocks. This Bailey, of Hannover, Mass., was a clock maker and the father of three sons who were clock makers. John II, Calvin and Lebbeus. John Sr. was also known to have made wooden work clocks as well as metal work clocks. As was John II. The painted metal dial with green and gilt decorated design retains most of its original paint and is simply signed John Bailey. We are not certain if this is the father (1730-1810) or the son (1751-1823). The case is mahogany with quarter columns and cutout Hepplewhite base. Crest surmounted by three brass ball. SIZE: 7’7” incl. finials. CONDITION: Generally good. Some paint loss to dial. Crest missing. 3-30424 (5,500-6,500)
