H. NICHOLS (American/British, 19th Century) SHIP IN DISTRESS AT SUNSET. Large oil on canvas nautical scene shows a sidewheel steamer in distress. A large group of seagulls fly over the rough seas and the background is a wonderful colored sunset from blue to red which is reflected in the ocean. Signed bottom right “H. A. Nichols” or possible “H. H. Nichols”. This possibly is the work of Hobart Nichols Jr. or Sr. Housed in a modern gilt gesso decorated frame. The stretcher having the remnants of a Philadelphia label. SIZE: 24″ x 42″. CONDITION: Craquelure, touch up with inpainting. Very good. 9-94663 (4,000-6,000)
