SPRINGFIELD “MODEL 1797 SHIP’S MUSKET”. Cal. 72. NSN. 42-1/4” rnd bbl. Proper type ramrod is 42” long and is threaded at base. Bayonet lug is on top of bbl and is 1-11/16” from muzzle. The “Z”-slot bayonet fits this lug reasonably well. It has a 14” triangular blade with short fuller at front end. A large “P” has been stamped on the side of the connecting arm. Lockplate is marked “SPRINGFIELD” in a downward arc. There is no date on buttplate and no inspector marks at rear of bbl. Sling swivels are 1-pc, but not welded. Lock is a good reconversion using mostly old parts. CONDITION: Metal has been cleaned bright, but light pitting remains. Vise marks at breech. Stock has been broken in two at wrist, repaired with dowels and fill. Bayonet is evenly pitted. Mechanically functional. Edwards Collection 4-58418 (5,000-8,000)
