FACTORY ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON MODEL 1 FIRST ISSUE 5TH TYPE REVOLVER. Cal. 22 Short. Blue and nickel finish, 3-3/16” ribbed oct bbl, brass frame, square butt and 2-pc ivory grips. Recoil shield is fixed to the frame with a rotating pivot. Bore has five grooves right hand twist and the earlier rotating plate ratchet of the 4th type. Frame, cylinder and bbl flats are very nicely factory engraved by Richard Bate Inshaw with patters of a bird dog on the left and a fox on the right surrounded by foliate and arabesque patterns. Bbl flats have flowers and leaves on the left side and arabesque patterns on the right with line border patterns down the backstrap and a horn of plenty with flowers on the butt. Cylinder is lightly engraved with foliate arabesque patterns and the back of the hammer is engraved in geometric patterns. It was shipped June 10, 1859. SN 5812. CONDITION: Good, all matching except the grips which are unnumbered. Frame retains about 20% silver plating with the balance a medium mustard patina. Bbl and cylinder retain an even very dark patina. Grips are a very dark yellow and are probably original to this revolver. Bore is dark with heavy pitting, mechanics are fine. 4-48077 JR160 (Anderson Collection) (5,000-10,000)
