SIR EDWARD BURNE-JONES (British, 1833-1898) THE DISCERNING EYE. Outstanding watercolor interior scene shows a woman seated in a Savaronola chair. She wears a brown dress and her feet are propped up on a rose colored pillow. She has selected a floral print material from a box to her left which has other pieces. The room is well appointed with a gilt decorated fancy cassone and claw foot two-tier table supported by full putti figures. Enamel decorated glassware, urn and bronze plaque have been placed on the furniture. Fine architectural columned walls and marble floor complete the scene. Signed lower left “E. Burne-Jones 1881”. Housed in a fine shell decorated gilt gesso frame with gilt liner and glass. Old label on reverse from the “Collection of Frederick A. Gill No. 4″ with artist name and medium.
