UNSIGNED (19th Century) “HIS HONOR HAMILTON JAY”. Large oil on canvas portrait purported to be Hamilton Jay. The portrait shows an older gentleman seated in a large armchair wearing a blue coat and white wig. He holds a rolled up paper which states “Publick Accounts Paid to the Year 1717 for 136,000,000”. Also inscribed on lower left “In the same year the auditor was prosecuted for 3-4. which one of his clerks took through inadvertency”. Housed in a large gesso decorated antique frame. The back stretcher has “W. Freeman & Son, Ltd. London Picture Restorers” label. Also pencil writing which is illegible. SIZE: 50” x 40”. CONDITION: Very good, restored. 5-71776 (3,000-5,000)
