ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “MANNIE SWAN”. Large oil on board ship portrait shows the black hulled Mannie Swan sailing right to left. Ship has three masts. The front mast in full square sail. Back masts are marconi rigged. Two men are seen on board. Name on stern. Blue and green white capped sea. Signed lower right “Antonio Jacobsen 1914” or “1919. The ship was built by Isaac Coombs & Co., Camden, Maine in 1891. PROVENANCE: The painting descended in the Melville family. Captain Frederick Charles Melville, British Expedition of “The City of New York”. He was born in Jamaica and lived in Lynn, Mass. Housed in a fine ogee type gilt wide frame. Written on back of board “Rockefeller Foundation 1076”. Also some other names and addressed. SIZE: 48” x 28”. CONDITION: Very good. Restored with inpainting. 9-96071 (15,000-20,000)
