AMOSKEAG MODEL 1861 MUSKET. Cal. 58. 42” part octagonal bbl, dated 1864 on the tail of the lock and top of the bbl. The cartouche is visible but not readable. Marked “U Eagle S / AMOSKEAG Mfg.Co../ MANCHESTER, N.H.” in front of the hammer. This rifle has been turned into a lamp. The front 9” of the stock, the ramrod and upper band are replacements. The muzzle has been slotted and drilled for the fixture, which outline can still be seen on the outside of the bbl. A series of holes, about 2-1/8” apart, are drilled down the top of the bbl. The front lockplate screw is deeply inset into the stock. The triggerguard bow is mounted backwards. Accompanying the rifle is a letter to Eldon saying that this rifle came out of the Amoskeag Factory and was given to Irving Field by a funeral director.
