LAWRENCE BEALL SMITH (American, 1909-1993) COVER ILLUSTRATION FOR CHRISTIAN HERALD Oil on canvas board illustration shows a young girl in orange and brown clothing seated on a fallen tree branch and she is feeding a group of chickadees and finches. Initialed lower left. At bottom margin of painting (under matte) is written “Set 4 Color Plates as per L/0 Note This art to be flopped”. This explains the reverse nature of the artist’s initials. On back of board is an Estelle Mandel label with artist, title and “Use as cover of Christian Herald”. Housed in a modern gilt frame with white matte. SIZE: Board: 24″ x 18″. Image: 18″ x 14″.
