RARE EXHIBITION PALMER CARBINE. Cal. 50RF. NSN. Fine light carbine with 20” rnd bbl and integral receiver. It has a small wedge shaped front sight and 2-position flip rear sight just over the chamber area. It has a tiny bolt that when turned 1/4 revolution allows the bolt to be opened for loading and extraction. It is mounted in a 1- pc walnut stock with raised side flats and a staple and ring in the left side. It has a 2- pc Springfield type trigger guard and a front action lock. The top of the receiver is marked “Wm. Palmer / Patent / December 22, 1863” and the lockplate is marked in front of the hammer “U.S. / E.G. Lamson & Co. / Windsor VT” with the date “1865” behind the hammer. The left side flat of the stock is stamped with the number “1399” and again on the top of the wrist, probably an old museum number, and it has tiny inspector initials just in front of the saddle ring staple. This undoubtedly was the Palmer exhibit rifle, possibly for use inside the plant or for outside expositions. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Metal retains most of its bright original nickel with some minor staining and a few light pinpoints of pimpling on the bbl. Stock has sharp edges with minor handling and storage marks and a series of bruises below the lockplate, otherwise retains most of its original factory oil finish. Mechanics are fine and it has a bright shiny bore with some very fine pitting near the chamber. 4-52488 JR445 (5,000-10,000)
