AMERICAN U.S. NAVY TROUSERS-POSSIBLY CIVIL WAR OR EARLY INDIAN WAR PERIOD. A very nice large pair of U.S. Regulation Navy enlisted man’s trousers. Manufactured of medium dark blue wool kersey with a 38” waist and 35” inseam. They are constructed with and 11 button fall front-the buttons are small being unmarked and made of thermoplastic material (gutta percha). The waist band is applied separately having a sizing “V” insert at the back. The trousers are fully lined in unbleached polished cotton with interior reinforcements for the fall front buttons. At the interior waistband is a sewn tag with “38 x 35” in period ink. On the front side of the waist is a large stenciled “M” in black ink and a black stamped spread winged eagle (for which I am unable to determine authenticity). This rare pair of Navy trousers have the same characteristics as the regulations for the American Civil War period, however, they may date to a later period. CONDITION: Very good. There are no tears or holes evident. The bottom of the trousers has been hemmed, however, it doesn’t appear as if any material was removed-just turned up and sewn. A very rare pair of American U.S. Navy pants for the sophisticated collector. 4-49199 CW (1,000-1,800)
