EXTREMELY RARE BALL CARBINE. Cal. 50 CF. 21-1/2” rnd bbl. The number 1516 is stamped on top of the wrist on the stock. This is a U.S. Cartridge Company collection number. The centerfire cartridge in a Ball Carbine is very rare and possibly unique. A letter from Andrew Lustyik accompanying the gun says that the only specimen he knew of was the one in the U.S. Cartridge Company collection, which is this specimen. The breechblock is unlike any other in that it has no notch in the side of the front end for the hammer to strike the cartridge. A separate firing pin, protruding slightly from the top of the breechblock, is struck by a small wedge on the bottom of the hammer nose. Note the different shape of hammer nose, which strikes the top of the breechblock. The cutoff devise on the left side of the action is drilled through the standard markings. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 98% of the brown on the bbl and casehardening on the action, brilliant on the right side, slightly faded on the left side and bottom. Hammer has traces of casehardening colors. Wood is also excellent. 4-52577 FS5 (5,000-8,000)
