HISTORIC CIVIL WAR ERA WALKING STICK. Silver headed stick, overall 34” long, of tapered varnished wood that appears to be ash or hickory. The head is 2-1/4” long, that bells out to about 1-1/2” diameter. It appears to be sterling silver and is beautifully engraved with floral and arabesque panels. The top of the head is inscribed “Dr/R.P. James/Of/Co. L. 6th Mich Cavalry/Aug 18. 1862/This stick is a relic/of Andersonville/Prison/Stockade”. The stick also has a 1/2” silver band about 4” from the top and at the bottom is a long brass band with a screwed in iron tip. It is accompanied by a hand written note from the consignors Aunt Nina sending him photographs of “Uncle Robert James who had the cane made from stockade at Andersonville Prison”. Also accompanied is a copy Robert P. James’ service in the Civil war, some misc. pension petitions and a history of “Sheridan’s Trevillian Raid of June 11, 1864”. James was under Custer’s command and was captured with a large number of Custer’s troops when they were overwhelmed while trying to sieze a Confederate supply convoy. This action is where James was captured and ultimately transferred to Andersonville June 21, 1864 and paroled on November 26, 1864. He was hospitalized throughout the remainder of 1864 and until May 22, 1865 when he was mustered out. He subsequently became a dentist in Kalamazoo, MI and died in 1926 at the age of 92. Research discloses that James may have obtained this piece of the stockade wall when the prison was expanded to accommodate more prisoners and the prisoners were given the wood. CONDITION: Extremely fine. The knob has numerous small dents and dings with a fine blackish age patina. Wood retains most of a fine varnish finish with several small nicks and scratches. 4-49440 JR25 (3,000-5,000)
