BASIL BRADLEY (British, 1842-1904) “THE YOUNG SHEPHERDESS. Important large oil on canvas painting shows a panoramic view of a river valley in the background with a large white horse ridden by an elderly gentleman holding a small ewe. A young shepherdess walks along side holding another small ewe. Two sheep dogs walk beside her. Eleven sheep graze on grassy slope. Two birds fly over cascading brook on left side. Extremely well detailed painting with life like details to figures and animals. Signed lower left “Basil Bradley 1880”. Title in liner of frame. Housed in a gilt multi-level period frame. PROVENANCE: Family history indicates that this painting hung in the National Gallery of Art in London and is being sold for a Houlton, ME family. SIZE: 36” h x 56-1/2” w. CONDITION: Small roughness to top edge, appears to have old relining, otherwise very good. 9-94080 (20,000-40,000)
