RARE SPECIAL ORDER ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-90. SN 37172. Beautiful early rifle with scarce 24” oct bbl, full magazine with ivory bead Lyman hunting front sight, no provisions for a rear seat and a Lyman tang sight. The top flat of the bbl is very nicely matted the full length. It has about 3X beautifully grained American walnut wood with “H” style checkered forearm and black insert pistol grip stock with Winchester embossed black hard rubber shotgun buttplate. It is fitted with factory sling swivels on the stock and forend cap. The receiver is very nicely engraved with a large vignette on the left side depicting a finely detailed Whitetail buck and doe in a woodland scene. The right side of the receiver has a small vignette of a flying goose above the loading gate and a slightly larger vignette of a creeping fox in front of the loading gate. Both sides have about 50% coverage fine arabesque patterns, which also extend down the lever, over the top of the receiver, on the hammer and down the top tang, as well as the bottom of the receiver and a small pattern on the bottom of the lever and around the screw holes in the forend cap. Accompanied by an early Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter identifying this rifle completely with $8.00 engraving and indicating that the muzzle was “counter sunk” 1/32”, which is visible on this rifle. The letter states that it was shipped November 27, 1889 and that the rubber buttplate and Lyman hunt sight were installed December 24, 1889 and that it was repaired and returned March 31, 1890. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains about 95% original blue, slightly dulled. There is a dent in the matting on the top flat of the bbl. Magazine tube retains about 95% plum blue. Receiver retains 15-20% faded case colors with the balance turned silver, gray in spots. Lever and hammer retain case colors in the sheltered areas with the balance turned silver. There is a hairline in the tip of the forearm, otherwise the wood is sound with several small nicks and scratches and usual handling and use marks and is missing a sliver by the left top tang, and retains 94-96% strong original varnish. Buttplate is an old replacement. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-52469 JR254 (20,000-35,000)
