WALDO PEIRCE (American, 1884-1970) TWELVE ENVELOPES WITH WATERCOLOR. Waldo Peirce was known for sending letters in envelopes that he drew watercolor sketches on. Some were complex scenes, others were simple doodles. The envelopes are all No. 10 size and date 1947 to 1962. Each envelope has a cancelled stamp and were sent to one of two people in Bangor, Maine. The envelopes are as follows: 1) Interior scene with Waldo and his son (1947 New York City); 2) Blue pitcher of flowers with chair and table (1962, Newburyport, MA); 3) Green and red holly (1958, Tucson, AZ); 4) “Desert Xmas Tree” showing a decorated cactus with gifts (1958, Tucson, AZ) 5) Dead fish on beach (1947, Searsport, ME); 6) Circus ring with figures and horse “Have just taken the kids to the Circus” (1954, Tucson, AZ); 7) “Have some autumn leaves…: (1959, Searsport, ME); 8) “Thanksgiving Greetings” with turkey in landscape (1953, Tucson, AZ); 9) Holly (1960, NYC, NY); 10) Schooner in Maine seacoast (Newburyport, MA); 11) Still life of flowers in vase (1960, Tucson, AZ); 12) Snow pile with building “NYC Under Snow” (1947, NYC, NY). Envelopes are contained in plastic sleeves in a notebook. Accompanying lot is a Waldo Peirce American Artist Group Monograph #5 book and April 1961 Downeast Magazine with artist story.
