WILLIAM MATTHEW PRIOR (American, 1806-1873) PORTRAIT OF ABRAHAM HAMMETT. Signed on reverse “Mr. Abraham Hammett Sept 7. 1830 by Prior”. Portrait shows a handsome man with black hair and brown eyes. Brass button coat with arms crossed at waist. Off his left shoulder is a window with outside scene. PROVENANCE: Exhibited at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center Williamsburg, VA in their “Making Faces; Aspect of American Portraiture (March 20th, 1977-April 30th 1978)”. Accompanied by a letter from the then curator, Donald Walters, stating the importance of the painting, both in Prior’s career and to the exhibition. Also listed in the Boston Anthenaeum Art Exhibition Index 1827-1874. Exhibited in 1831 as No. 213. Comes with mahogany period frame, which is missing its wood oval windowed matte. SIZE: 30″ x 24″.
