SPECTACULAR ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40) SN 72824. Beautiful 2nd model ’73 carbine, gilt and nickel-plated with fine, about 60% coverage, Ulrich style engraving on the receiver, dust cover and buttplate tang. It has 2 to3X uncheckered American walnut wood with straight stock and carbine buttplate with trap. It has 20” bbl with full magazine, Baker front sight and 2-position flip rear sight. There is a staple and ring in the left side of the receiver. The engraving consists of a vignette of a running white tail buck on the left side plate and a diamond shaped vignette on the right side plate, all surrounded with foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background. It has a fine, straight-line border around the edges with light scalloping. The top edges of the front flats are engraved with a modified scallop pattern. The dust cover, front and rear edges of the top of the receiver, top tang and buttplate tang are also lightly engraved and there is a mirror image engraving pattern on the carrier and bottom of the receiver. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this carbine with “fancy stock, nickel and gilt, engraved $5.00” and indicating shipment September 23, 1881 with five other arms to order #26277. Returned and repaired December 12, 1901. Also accompanying is a Winchester Museum card dated 1971 and a Winchester Museum letter dated 1974, all stating the same information. Additionally included is the original museum receipt from the Homer Garrison Museum dated 1980, receiving on loan, what is probably this carbine. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 70-75% bright original nickel with the balance flaked to a light patina. Magazine tube retains about 60% original nickel, flaking to patina. Receiver retains 60-70% gold wash with the balance a gray metal color. Buttplate retains traces of original gold wash with the lever and hammer retaining 90-95% original nickel plating. Wood is sound with usual light to moderate nicks and dings and a few small gouges on the right side of the butt stock. Wrist is dark oil stained and the balance of the wood retains most of its original bright piano varnish finish, possibly an old restored finish.
