EXTREMELY RARE BAILEY BREECH LOADING RIFLE. Cal. 50. 27-5/8” octagonal bbl. The top of the bbl is marked “J.B. RIPLEY & CO. CLAREMONT N.H. / PATENT FEB. 20, 1839.” On the upper left flap “REBARRELED NOV. 1943 BY / WALTER L. MAC GREGOR”. The action is lightly engraved. Bailey, Ripley & Smith patent No. 1084 was issued to Lebbeus Bailey of Portland, Maine, John B. Ripley of Claremont, and William B. Smith of Cornish, N.H. Their patent was for an “Improved Water-Proof Rifle” and covered not only the action but also the steel cartridges, magazine tube, and priming mechanism associated with it. The idea was evidently not successful as only two are known. It was restored by Eldon as when he found it the bbl was rusted almost entirely through. A specimen cartridge accompanies the gun. It is slightly too small, but shows all of the features of the patent. CONDITION: Light to moderate spots of pitting on the action. Stock has been repaired along the magazine track, lightly sanded and refinished with the properly aged finish on the bbl. This presents a fine appearing, possibly unique rifle. 4-52768 FS10 (5,000-8,000)
