CHILDE HASSAM (American, 1859-1935) MOTHER AND CHILD IN GARDEN. Outstanding and important oil on board scene shows a woman (Annie Magill Doan) standing in a garden dressed in a white blouse and long blue skirt. She holds an infant (Calvin B. Doan) dressed in a blue sailor’s smock and striped blue and white undergarment. She stands on a brick walkway and beside her on the walkway is a large ceramic flowerpot and metal watering can. A wooden box is seen behind her which resembles a mulching bin. A small brick building is seen on the left side with a large wheel attached which may provide water for the large garden area. The right side has a profusion of brightly colored flowers while at the tree lines in the distant landscape are outlines of several buildings all under a blue sky. Signed lower left “Childe Hassam” Housed in a carved re-gilt period arts and crafts style frame. The back of the board in period writing “DOAN BOSTON MASS.” PROVENANCE: Descended through the Doan family to present consignor. SIZE: 12” x 16-1/8”. CONDITION: Very good.
