UNUSUAL FLINTLOCK PISTOL. NSN. 65 Cal. 11-7/8” ribbed rnd bbl. Marked “H — ELLIS” and “IN — DONCASTER” on both the front bbl rib and the lockplate. “ELLIS” is stamped vertically inside a carved frame at the rear of the banana lockplate. What is unusual about this gun is the English marking on what is obviously a Northern Italian pistol, but Ellis is known to have made this style guns. Others have been pictured in books. The bbl has a raised rib at the rear terminating in a tree, all raised above the surface of the bbl. The front rib is similarly decorated. The lockplate has relief carved details at the rear, on the hammer, the pan and the frizzen. The rear of the hammer spur is carved with a face. The sideplate is done in a floral scrolling with a grotesque face at the front. The triggerguard and grip cap are similarly carved with a large grotesque face in the center of the buttcap. The ramrod is missing. The thumb piece has faces at the top and bottom and contains a relief carved vertical arm holding a Fleur de Lis. The stock is also relief carved at the rear of the bbl, around both the lockplate and sideplate, both sides of the forearm, rear of the tailpipe and front of the triggerguard. The finial of the triggerguard is a sculpted Fleur de Lis. CONDITION: Blue/gray patina on all metal parts with a little light pitting. Deluxe burl walnut stock has numerous insect holes and has been cracked below the lockplate, at the front lockplate screw and at the tip of the forearm. Mechanically fine. 4-58407 FS753 (4,000-6,000)
