VERY FINE JENNINGS SECOND MODEL RIFLE. Cal. 54. SN 384. 26” rnd bbl, marked “ROBBINS & LAWRENCE / MAKERS / WINDSOR VT.” at the front of the left side of the action and “G.P. DIXON AGENT / NEW YORK / PATENTED 1849” at the rear. Lewis Jennings patented this rifle on Christmas day 1849, patent number 6973. It employed a sliding trigger with a rack, which turned a pinion operating on another rack on the bottom of the breechblock. This was thought to be simpler than the original Jennings lever action mechanism, but was not much more successful and only a few were made. The engraving on the frame, bbl, triggerguard and buttplate is very light scrolls. The number 1562 on the right side of the buttstock is the U.S. Cartridge Company collection number. Unlike the first model, the second model is only a single shot with the “magazine tube” occupied by a cleaning rod. CONDITION: Excellent. 98% brown on the bbl and ramrod holder, strong blue on the triggerguard and traces mixed with light surface rust elsewhere. Stock retains most of its original varnish. One of the best specimens known. Action actually works! 4-52568 FS44 (10,000-15,000)
