RARE SMALL SIZE C.B. HOLDEN TIP UP SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 25 Stevens RF. SN 3. Unusual little rifle that resembles a single bbl shotgun with spur trigger. It has a 20” oct to rnd bbl with unusual dovetail front sight and is missing the rear sight. The oct portion of the bbl is a sleeve over the round portion. The top flat is engraved in script, “C.B. Holden Maker Worcester, Mass” and the left flat is marked “Rebored & Rif’l’d by J.P. Stevens A. & T. Co. Chicopee Falls, Mass.”. The receiver is nickeled brass with light engraved arabesque patterns on both sides with geometric patterns over the top and geometric patterns on the bottom and tip of the tang. The opening lever is on the right side beside the hammer. It has an unusual nickeled cast brass tiny forearm that also has light arabesque pattern engraving. The buttstock is nicely figured American walnut with checkered long grip that has a coarse checkered nickeled brass grip cap and buttplate. The top tang has an integral sight base missing its sight and tension spring. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Good. Bbl retains about 85% refinished blue turning plum. It was probably refinished when it was rebored. It has a couple of spots of caked rust about mid-point. Receiver retains about 93-95% original nickel with a gouge in the right side and some hammer marks by the trigger pin, which is a replacement. Forearm retains about 95% bright original nickel. Stock has a chip by the lower tang and usual light handling and use marks and retains most of its original finish. Hammer will not hold in the safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bore with heavy pitting at the chamber end, lighter toward the muzzle. 4-52813 JR649 (2,000-4,000)
