RARE C.B. HOLDEN SINGLE SHOT LONG RANGE TARGET RIFLE. Cal. appears to be about 45 with a long straight taper case. NSN. Fine long range rifle with 31-11/16” heavy tapered rnd bbl with large block, globe, spirit level, windage front sight and a heavy 2-position rear sight with short open blade and a 1-5/8” ladder blade with sliding aperture. The bbl is not marked with the maker’s name, but does have the name “C.A. Chapman” in tiny letters on the top flat behind the rear sight. The bore has seven deep lands & grooves, conventional rifling, left hand twist. It has a nickeled brass receiver with right side, front action lockplate and hammer and a dummy sideplate on the left side. The receiver has the unique falling block action with front lever, released by a spring-loaded button. It has a spring-loaded 2-pc firing pin and has a unique top mounted manual extractor. The extractor knob and latch lever release knob are coarse checkered. The top front of the receiver is faceted with three flats that are further machined to eight flats. It has very nicely figured straight grain American walnut 2-pc stock with a large round forearm that has a dbl stepped nickeled brass forend cap and coarse amateur checkering around the diamond shaped screw escutcheon. It has an uncheckered extended grip with nickeled grip cap and a very unusual criss-cross checkered nickeled iron buttplate with light engraving on the tang. It has a tang mounted vernier sight with 3-1/8” blade with large eyecup. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains about 95% original brown finish with scattered pinpoints of fine surface rust. Front sight is intact with good spirit level. Receiver retains 95-97% strong original nickel with a few light scratches and nicks. Sideplate retains a blue-gray patina and the lockplate a silver-gray patina. Stock has a hairline back of the top tang on each side, otherwise is sound and retains most of its original varnish finish with light nicks and dings and some crazing near the buttplate. Forearm has light nicks and scratches and retains most of an old refinish. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52809 JR636 (5,000-10,000)
