EDWARD SHERIFF CURTIS (American, 1868-1952) “CANYON DE CHELLY”. Orotone (or goldtone) photograph depicts seven Indians on horseback with a dog traveling along a flat canyon floor with tall canyon cliffs behind. Clear sky. Signed lower left “Curtis”. Also “Copyright 1904” by his initials. Housed in its original frame. The backing paper is not present but the original label is partially intact. The goldtone is a glass plate positive photograph with a remarkably luminous quality obtained by printing a reversed image on glass and then backing it with a mixture of powered gold pigment and banana oil. They are then housed in very ornately molded and gilded frames. The process is perfected by the Curtis Studio and given the nickname Curt-Tone. Curtis produces Curt-Tones of some of his most popular Indian images and they soon become a great source of income for the studio. SIZE: Overall is 15-3/4” x 18-3/4”. SIGHT SIZE: 10-1/2” x 13-1/2”.
