RARE C.B. HOLDEN SINGLE SHOT LONG RANGE TARGET RIFLE. Cal. 44-60-395. SN 20. Fine long-range rifle with 30-1/4” tapered rnd bbl with large block windage globe front sight and 2-position flip rear sight marked “100” and “200”. The top is marked, “C.B. Holden” in old English and “MF’R WORCESTER, MASS” in block letters. The bore has twelve lands & grooves that are Metford style rifling, right hand twist. It has a nickeled brass receiver with right side, front action lockplate and hammer and a dummy sideplate on the left side. The receiver has the unique falling block action with front lever, released by a spring-loaded button. It has a spring-loaded 2-pc firing pin with unique top mounted manual extractor. The top front of the receiver is faceted with three flats and is uniquely engraved with foliate and arabesque very fine patterns. These dainty patterns are also on the top and bottom tangs, bottom of the receiver, trigger guard and ball of the opening lever and firing pin bolster. The lockplates are beautifully engraved with about 30% coverage fine arabesque patterns with wavy line and dot borders. The frame has very fine unique borders all around the sideplates and all the edges. It has very nicely figured American walnut 2-pc stock and forearm with extensively checkered round forearm and extended grip with nickeled grip cap. The front edge of the grip has fine square checkered panel. It has a very unusual criss-cross checkered nickeled brass shotgun buttplate with light engraving on the tang. It has a long-range sight mounted on the top tang with 4-1/2” vernier blade with large eyecup. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden and a copy of Mr. Owens’ inventory sheet. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains 85-90% strong plum/blue finish with a few scattered spots of light pitting and a thin area over the forearm. Receiver retains most of its milky nickel finish. Sideplate retains about 50% case colors with the balance turning silver. Lockplate retains about 70% case colors, brilliant in the sheltered area with the balance turned silver. Tang sight tension spring is weak. Stock has a crack by the top tang and a hairline back of the top tang; otherwise the wood is sound with a few light scratches and minor handling marks and retains most of its original bright varnish. There is a nick in the comb made by the sight. Buttplate retains about 90% original nickel. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52499 JR634 (5,000-10,000)
