EDWARD SHERIFF CURTIS (American, 1868-1952) “CANYON DEL MUERTO”. Orotone (or goldtone) photograph depicts four men on horseback proceeding through canyon with steep sides and steep cliff backdrop under cloud and clear sky. Signed in gold lower left “Curtis”. Housed in its original bronze colored gesso decorated frame. The original green back paper and label “The price of this Curt-tone is $15 The Curtis Studio”. The goldtone is a glass plate positive photograph with a remarkably luminous quality obtained by printing a reversed image on glass and then backing it with a mixture of powered gold pigment and banana oil. They are then housed in very ornately molded and gilded frames. The process is perfected by the Curtis Studio and given the nickname Curt-Tone. Curtis produces Curt-Tones of some of his most popular Indian images and they soon become a great source of income for the studio. SIZE: Overall is 18-1/2” x 15-1/2”. SIGHT SIZE: 13-1/2” x 10-1/2”.
