CASED PAIR MANTON SINGLE SHOT PISTOLS. Cal .50. 10-1/8” oct bbls in a 18-1/4” x 9” mahogany case with marquetry edges. The carrying handle in the lit is rectangular with points on the ends. Case is lined with green velvet and has compartments for the two guns, cleaning rod, bullet mold and three compartment powder flasks. The layout is somewhat unusual in that the pistols are aligned bbl to bbl. The pistols are marked “MANTON” on the locks and “MANTON * LONDON” in gold on top of bbl. There is also a gold band at the rear of each bbl. There is light engraving on bbl tang and trigger guards. According to the serial number these pistols were probably made in 1797 and are nearly identical to a pair made the same year and pictured in Neal & Back’s Manton Book. The layout of the case is entirely different. The bullet mold is a common 32 bore mold and is probably a replacement. The flask is unmarked and not of the quality found in Manton’s sets. The key works the lock. SN 2836. CONDITION: Pistols are about fine retaining about 1/3 the very thin damascus finish on bbl but most of the varnish on the wood. Locks have mostly faded to silver. The case has minor damage and slight repair on the exterior, interior is very dirty and somewhat scuffed. Locks are fine. 4-49123 X48 (6,000-10,000)
