RARE LEWIS INSPECTED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal 45 Colt. SN 15683. Standard cavalry Colt, 7-1/2 inch bbl, full front sight, small slanted letter address with serifs at each end. It has a first type ejector rod housing with bull’s eye ejector rod head. It has 2-line patent dates with a small “US” on the left side of frame. The various parts have a tiny “L” sub-inspector mark & the left grip has a barely legible “SBL” cartouche. Accompanied by a Kopec letter authenticating this revolver as completely original & one of the very few known Lewis inspected cavalry revolvers. He states that as of May 1997 his records could only account for eighteen Lewis sub-inspected revolvers. A note from consignor states that this revolver was carried by John M. McDonald who was Sheriff of Woodbury County, Iowa which apparently encompasses Sioux City during period 1881-87. He states that this revolver was acquired from an estate where it had been for about 50 years. He states that it is alleged that this revolver was used by Sheriff McDonald to kill one of the James Gang & an escaping prisoner. Also accompanying is a notice from the administrator of the will of Nettie McDonald of Sioux City, Iowa which lists two revolvers including this one. CONDITION: Fine plus, all matching including bbl & cylinder. Bbl retains 40-45% orig blue, strong & bright in sheltered areas with balance a light patina. Frame retains traces of case colors in very sheltered areas with balance a light patina. Hammer retains about 50% faded case colors & grip frame 10-15% thin orig blue. Base pin is battered. Screws are mostly fine. Grip is sound with a chipped right toe with legible cartouche on left side & retains traces of orig finish.
