EARLY WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SGL SHOT SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 38-55. SN 1162. Standard grade rifle with 30″ #3 weight oct bbl with altered Rocky Mountain front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight and a most unusual peep sight added just in front of the receiver by means of a screw on each top side flat. Left front edge of the receiver has a 3/16″ half circle with a corresponding groove on the bottom flat of the bbl. One might speculate this was possibly an early experiment for some sort of takedown retaining pin. It is fitted with sgl-set trigger & the bbl is not marked with the size number in front of the forearm. Serial number does appear on the bottom flat underneath the main spring. It has nicely figured American walnut wood with black insert semi-Schnable tip forearm & straight stock with crescent buttplate. This rifle will letter as it is except it is listed with a plain trigger. No mention is made of the notch in the edge of the receiver or the groove on the bottom of the bbl. It was shipped 4/15/1886. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Retaining virtually all of its orig factory finish to both metal & wood with minor small nicks in the stock and a small chip on the top rear edge of the receiver. Right edge of the forearm is missing a small chip. Case colors on the receiver appear to be brilliant under a heavy coating of old dried oil or wax, which is all over the entire surface of the rifle. Set trigger does not appear to be functioning, otherwise mechanics are fine, and brilliant shiny bore. Pierre Renaud Collection 4-55652 JR249 (5,000-7,000)
