DELBERT DANA COOMBS (American, 1850-1938) PORTRAIT OF MAINE GOVERNOR DINGLEY. Large oil on canvas portrait shows Governor Dingley seated in a Victorian wood and upholstered open armchair. He wears a black suit and bow tie and has graying beard and looks toward viewer. In his lap, being held by his hand, is the Tariff Act that he was instrumental in enacting. He sits at a large roll top desk. Signed lower right “D. D. Coombs 1899”. Housed in a signed Newman Macklin Co. frame No. 9142. Governor Nelson Dingley, Jr. (1832-1899) served as Governor of Maine in 1874. He was a member of the State House of Representatives, elected to the 47th Congress and re-elected to the 48th and to the seven succeeding Congresses serving until his death in Washington, D.C. January 13th, 1899. PROVENANCE: Descended directly through the Dingley family to present owner. A very desirable historical painting by one of Maine’s fine artists. SIZE: 50” x 40”.
