VERY EARLY NEW HAVEN VOLCANIC NO. 1 POCKET PISTOL. Cal. 31. SN 7. Deluxe engraved in the very rare 1850’s “Bellfloer” style. Rare pistol with 3-1/2″ oct bbl with integral magazine tube & fixed sights. It has 2-pc walnut grips. Frame & backstrap are very beautifully engraved with foliate arabesque patterns with a cross hatch & dot design over the top three flats & feather patterns by the ejection port. Raised side flats also have feather patterns with a flower blossom in the center. Rear edge of the sideplates have a ribbon or belt pattern and there is a scallop & dot pattern on the other three edges. Backstrap has foliate & floral arabesque patterns with a shell pattern around the hammer opening in the frame. Inscribed on the upper right frame is the name, W. T. Harvey. A brief Internet search reveals a gentleman of this same name in the state of Virginia during the period. This is one of only approx. 850 of these little pistols made between 1857-1860 and is certainly deserving of further and in-depth research. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, all matching including the grips. Bbl & magazine tube retain a smooth brown patina with very fine pitting. Frame has good sharp edges & retains a fine medium mustard patina. Hammer & trigger retain virtually all of their brilliant case colors & the lever about 50% bright colors. Grips are sound with a dark oil finish. Mechanics are a little stiff & sometimes difficult to close, but otherwise are fine. Strong bore with light to moderate pitting. 4-57451 JR793 (10,000-15,000)
