MARTIALLY MARKED INSCRIBED HENRY RIFLE WITH EXTREMELY RARE DUST COVER. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 7609. Late martial Henry with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, with integral magazine tube. It has German silver front sight blade & 900 yard ladder rear sight. It has straight grain walnut stock with tiny, inspector initials “A.W.M.” on the left wrist and has a faint Henry bump below the stock swivel and has a corresponding staple on the left side of the bbl. It has crescent brass buttplate with trap containing an orig 3-pc brass & iron-wiping rod. Receiver is period jeweler engraved with patterns of flowers & leaves on the left side with some light arabesque & border patterns. Right side is engraved with the sideplate bearing the name “F.X. WIEDENMANN”. A copy of the roster of Wis. Vol. War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 for the 35th Reg’t Inf, Co H shows that Ferdinand Wiedemann was from “Rubicon, Wis., enlisted Oct. 10, 1864 from Co. E, 20th Wis. Inf.; M.O. Oct. 9, 1865 – term expired” . The roster shows a missing “N’ in his name. We assume, it was possibly an oversight by those preparing the roster, or perhaps the jeweler inscribing the gun spelled his name incorrectly? His inscribed name is surrounded by a heavy vine & leaf border with oak leaves & acorns. Front flat has flower blossoms & leaves. Top flats of the receiver have floral & foliate arabesque patterns also. It is accompanied by an ultra-rare orig Henry dust cover which is engraved with what appears to be a stylized Confederate flag consisting of two crossing panels having thirteen small circles which is consistent with the thirteen states of the Confederacy. Dust cover is a thin sheet of brass pinned with four small copper pins to two thin sheets of rosewood. Serial number appears on the left side of the lower tang, under the wood, inside the top tang channel in the stock and inside the toe of the buttplate. All the screws are proper Henry screws. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain 40-50% orig blue with the balance flaked, not worn, to a dull patina. Receiver has good strong edges showing very light wear and retains a fine medium patina. Stock has an internal crack in the wrist, not visible without removing the stock. Otherwise the wood is sound and retains 93-95% orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp, very bright shiny bore with a spot or two of pitting. Dust cover is sound with a fine medium patina.
