FINE HISTORIC REMINGTON MODEL 1875 SGL ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 241. Nickel finish with 7-1/2″ rnd bbl, fixed sights & 2-pc walnut grips. Inside of the left grip is written in pencil “AUG 24TH / 26 / BOB BAIN / DAWSON CITY”. Bbl has usual 1-line address with “44” on the left side of the frame by the bbl. Accompanied by a letter from E.J. (Ted) Bell dated May 6, 97 to someone named Rodney wherein Mr. Bell states that he purchased the revolver in Canada in 1988 from Mr. Leslie Johnson of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. At that time Mr. Johnson was allegedly in his mid-80’s and was disposing of his huge gun collection. Mr. Bell states that Mr. Johnson told him that when he was a young man he made his first trip to Alaska & met Mr. Bob Bain of Dawson City. Reportedly Mr. Bain had his father’s Remington which was brought to Alaska prior to the gold rush. Apparently when Mr. Johnson purchased the revolver he had Mr. Bain make the inscription inside the grip. Also accompanying is a copy of a picture of a man panning gold, presumably Mr. Bain or his father. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Overall the revolver retains 95-97% strong bright orig nickel with a few scattered flaked pimples of lost nickel which have turned to dark patina. Left grip has a large gouge with some missing wood in the upper edge with a longitudinal crack down the back edge. There are a couple of other heavy dings with light scratches & a few hammer marks on the bottom. Overall retains 60-70% orig varnish. Hand spring is broken, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bore with moderate to heavy pitting. A historic gold rush revolver that could stand some additional research. 4-56821 JR788 (4,000-6,000)
