JAPANESE SILVER-CASED COMPASS AND SCAPHE SUNDIAL. 19th century, Japan. Brass hinged case holding compass and scaphe dial. Interior with blackened brass surround graduated and divided into twelve Zodiac sections, each with a different character and with nine subdivisions. The interior of the lid with silvered brass scaphe dial with pin gnomen, additionally with twelve Zodiacal characters within a border of stylized clouds. The exterior of the repousse silver hinged case carved with a dragon on one side, cloud bands on the opposing side centering a suspension loop. SIZE: Closed: 1-7/8″ dia. PROVENANCE: Similar example by Christie’s of California, October 24, 2001, lot 85. CONDITION: With old, if not original, surfaces and with normal and expected wear and abrasions due to age.
