VERY EARLY COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44 CF (44-40). SN 40956. Blue & case colored with 7-1/2″ bbl with small block letter one line address. orig front sight. Second type ejector rod housing with bulls eye ejector rod head. It has three-line patent dates with “44.C.F.” on the left shoulder of the trigger guard and 1-pc walnut grip. There is a tiny 44 on the bottom of the bbl just in front of the base pin. This is one of the very earliest 44 cal single actions as it is generally accepted that the 44-40 cal was not introduced until 1878 and neither does it have the etched panel on the bbl of the later 44-40 revolvers. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter identifying this revolver with bbl length and type of stocks not listed and indicating shipment December 28, 1877 to H & D Folsom Arms Company, New York, New York. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. All matching numbers including the bbl, cylinder & grip. Bbl retains about 50% orig blue, glossy & bright in the sheltered areas turned to a dark plum patina elsewhere with a worn area at the muzzle. Ejector rod housing retains about 75% orig blue, glossy & bright in the gullets mixed with patina on the outer radius. Cylinder retains traces of orig blue in the flutes and overall is a medium to dark patina with heavy cylinder line and some fine pitting. Frame has traces of orig case colors, strong & bright in the very sheltered areas being mostly a brown patina. Hammer retains 60-70% case colors, faded on the sides, strong on the back edge turned to patina on the top edge. Grip frame retains 30-40% orig blue with the balance a blue/brown patina. Grip is extremely fine with a chip in the left toe and light to moderate edge wear with a few minor nicks & scratches and retains about 95% strong orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp.
