*BOSS THORP OWNED REMINGTON MODEL 8 SEMI-AUTO RIFLE. Cal. 30 Rem. SN 61536. Standard rifle with 22″ shrouded bbl, Redfield front sight & standard semi-buckhorn rear sight. It has nicely figured, uncheckered walnut wood with semi-schnable forearm & straight grip with serrated steel buttplate. Left side of the stock has a 1-1/2″ x 7/8″ silver oval plate inscribed “CHIEF R.D. THORP / FROM THE BOYS / XMAS 1929”. Accompanied by a heavy brown leather saddle scabbard, 32-1/2″ long with numbers near the top. It has military style construction with copper rivets securing the saddle straps. Both saddle straps & the side of the scabbard are marked “BOSS THORP” in ink. Also accompanied by a notarized Collector’s Firearms letter stating that this rifle was bought May 11, 2002 from Bruce Rade, grandson of Boss Thorp. Also accompanying is a copy of the Austin American newspaper of Oct. 11, 1954 when Boss Thorp was beginning his 27th year as Chief of Police, Austin, TX. Also accompanying is a copy of the cover of the Sherriff’s Association of Texas magazine which has a picture of Boss Thorpe holding his twin grandsons, Brent Jay & Bruce Ray Rade. Also accompanying are seven police shooting medals won by Boss Thorp during his tenure as Chief of Police of Austin, TX, 1928-58. They were purchased from June Thorp Rade, the daughter of Boss Thorp in Feb. 1990. There are also three copies of photographs of Boss Thorp.

Boss Thorp was a very well-known person in the Austin, TX area having been a semi-pro baseball player in the early part of the 20th century. He was so well-known & respected in the area that there is a baseball field in Austin dedicated to him.

CONDITION: Very fine. Overall the metal retains 93-95% strong orig blue with some thinning around the muzzle & left side of the receiver. Wood is sound with numerous small nicks & dings and has five filled notches on the forearm & retains about 90% orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. Medals, some in their orig boxes, are all fine. Scabbard is fine. Shows moderate to heavy wear with a hole near the toe. One strap retainer is broken. 4-56445 JR520 (2,250-3,250)
