OKLAHOMA LAWMAN USED FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40) SN 110056. This revolver was the property of James Turney who was the City Marshall of Altus, Oklahoma in 1909 and earlier, beginning his law enforcement career in 1885 in the cities of Vernon and Chillicothe, TX. His son, in a signed statement, relates that his father owned this Colt and had a reputation as an excellent marksman. The son further details in this letter an entry in an old book Western Badmen, author unknown, regarding a story of Jim Turney leading a posse which chased the Dalton gang out of Oklahoma into Kansas where they were killed at Coffeeville. He further states that Jim Turney later became the Chief of Police of Lockney, TX. where he was nearly killed with a knife, after which his wife convinced him to leave law enforcement, which he did, moving to Rincon, NM, and in 1929 Riverside, CA., and in 1936 to Huntington Beach, CA. where he died in 1948 at the age of 88. Another story the son relates is one night a woman led a group of men into town to “get his father”. He had no knowledge of what happened to the men, but the woman was arrested and had to be transported by buggy to “Mangum” for trial. He states that his father had to shackle her feet, handcuff her and tie the handcuffs to the shackles to keep her from fighting him. He said that she was the vilest mouthed person he had had any dealings with and “that was the longest 40 miles he ever drove”.

The revolver is described as having nickel finish, 2-3/4″ bbl, orig front sight, 2-line address and a partially legible etched panel on the left side. It has 3-line patent dates with “44 CF” on the left front web of the trigger guard. It is fitted with Rampant Colt eagle grips. It is accompanied by a cabinet sized photo of a mustachioed man wearing glasses, a 3-pc suite with bow tie and a five-pointed City Marshall star. The frame of the photo is marked “Moore & Walk / Altus, Okla.” This same star badge also accompanies as does a small shield-shaped Deputy Marshall badge with a cutout five-point star in the center. Both these badges appear to be authentic and completely orig to the period. The aforementioned letter from Marshall Turney’s son is laminated and framed and accompanies this lot. CONDITION: Revolver, overall, retains about 60% milky orig nickel with the loss areas a dark brown patina. Etched panel is partially visible. Will not hold in the safety or half cocked notches, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bore with moderate pitting. Photograph is fine and crystal clear and the badges are fine with the Deputy Marshal having some slightly flaked nickel with brass underneath showing through. Letter is slightly yellowed. A rare grouping from a real Wild West law enforcement officer. 4-58339 JR488 (5,000-10,000)
