IDENTIFIED COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER- J. M. BROWN, COMPANY G, 20TH NEW YORK VOLUNTEER CAVALRY. The identification for this Colt revolver comes for the Order Books of Companies A through M, 20th New York Cavalry. A photo static copy of these order books accompany the revolver which clearly list this revolver SN 141625 as assigned to Private J.M. Brown (this serial number also appears under the name Alexander Arthur, however, the number has been crossed out in contemporary ink). Standard .44 cal Colt Model 1860 Army revolver-6-shot rebated cylinder, iron frame, brass trigger guard and walnut grip. All serial numbers match on metal parts. Co. G of the 20th N.Y. Cavalry (A.K.A. McClellan Cavalry) was mustered into service Sept. 3, 1863 being recruited from Albany, Cape Vincent, Rome, Syracuse and Watertown areas of upstate New York. The regiment served in the 22nd Corps Department of Virginia and fought engagements at Smithfield, Suffolk, Jamestown Island, Petersburg, Richmond, Williamsburg and Appomattox among others. The regiment lost 48 in battle-related casualties and 123 by disease. A very nice example of an identified Civil War cavalry trooper’s revolver. CONDITION: Good. Metal parts have been cleaned and now retain a light grey patina with spotty pitting overall. The revolver is mechanically operational, bore is dark, trigger guard is slightly bent, and grips may be replaced as they do not fit very well. 4-49685 CW(1,400-1,600)
