IDENTIFIED COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER- DENNISTON D. DEWEY, COMPANY C, 16TH PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER CAVALRY. The identification for this Colt revolver comes from the Order Books of Companies A through M, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. A photo static copy of these order books accompany the revolver which clearly list this revolver serial number 77929 as assigned to Private Denniston D. Dewey, Company C. Standard .44 caliber Colt Model 1860 Army revolver-6-shot rebated cylinder, iron frame, brass trigger guard and walnut grip. All serial numbers match on metal parts. Private Dewey, a blacksmith, enlisted on August 2, 1862 and was mustered out with his regiment June 15, 1865. This regiment saw conspicuous service throughout many important engagements including Kelly’s Ford, Brandy Station, GETTYSBURG, Martinsburg, South Anna, Malvern Hill and Weldon Railroad among many others. Private Dewey was sick in the hospital at Philadelphia from Sept. 1863 through August 1864 where after he performed dismounted service as a blacksmith for the regiment until his discharge in June 1865. By all accounts Dewey was present at Gettysburg. Photo copies of Regimental Order Book and Dewey’s archive records accompany. CONDITION: Very Good. Metal parts have been cleaned and now retain a light grey patina with no heavy pitting. The revolver is mechanically operational, bore is dark, brass trigger guard uncleaned with nice patina, and grips worn with a minor chip at the toe. A very respectable Colt Army revolver identified to a Gettysburg combatant. 4-49684 CW (2,000-3,000)
