GEN. GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER’S PERSONAL TRUNK. Large brown leather trunk, 33″ long x 19″ wide x about 20″ high, made from heavy “sole leather” and so marked in an impressed stamp on the lid that states “WARRANTED SOLE LEATHER / WITH / STEEL SPRINGS”. It has two closure straps with a thick leather lifting handle for the lid and is decorated with various border patterns on all sides. It has a large brass lock on the front with the hasp section broken away. It is lined with cream colored cloth. Accompanied by a sworn & witnessed statement from Mrs. Claribel Vivian who swears that she is the niece of Gen. Custer and the daughter of Nevin Custer living in Monroe, Michigan as of Feb. 12, 1950. In the statement she is transferring the trunk to Dr. Lawrence A. Frost of Monroe, Michigan. It subsequently was obtained on May 1, 1961 from Dr. Frost by Don & Stella Foote of Billings, Montana with receipt enclosed, and remained in their collection & museum until recently. Also accompanied by a reproduction of the Bismark Dakota Territory Tribune Extra account of the Custer fight. It describes the fight in lurid detail and lists by name the troops killed. CONDITION: Trunk is moderately soiled with some seam damage on the lid and bottom with dry & crackled leather with some losses around the edge of the lid. Overall retains a fine natural leather color. 4-55778 (15,000-30,000)
