EXTREMELY RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1882 RIFLE. SN 197074. 28”rnd bbl. Only 26 of these rare rifles were made. They are easily identified by the length of the bbl, and the two bands holding the bbl to the stock. The sling swivels are contoured to fit around the bottom of the stock so the rifle could be used in a carbine boot. The left side of the ski jump rear side is marked “28” / 5”. The slide of the rear sight itself has the windage feature locked with a screw. The “SWP” cartouche on the left side of the stock is dated “1882”. The other features are standard with the low arch breechblock dated “1873” and no date on the lockplate. The ramrod is correct with the long jag on the tip. CONDITION: Bbl is lightly pitted overall with blue only at the breech. Breechblock retains about 90% of its bright casehardening colors. Lockplate has about 60% blue, the trigger guard about 10%. Buttplate has a gray patina with some light rust at the top. Wood has normal handling marks with chips along the ramrod channel and around the lock. Mechanically excellent. 4-57295 (5,000-7,000)
