SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1868 TRAPDOOR RIFLE.

SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1868 TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. SN 15553. Usual configuration with 32-1/2″ rnd bbl, square base front sight/bayonet lug & 1,000-yard ladder rear sight. Breechblock is dated “1869” and the lockplate “1863”. It is mounted in a 1-pc, walnut stock with two bands & a slotted head-wiping rod. Left side flat has three visible cartouches & an area where a fourth one was apparently obliterated. CONDITION: Metal has all been cleaned white and is now beginning to patinate. Stock is sound with a couple of gouges & minor nicks & dings and retains most of an old refinish. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with scattered light pitting.
