SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1879 TRAPDOOR CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. SN 176819. Standard carbine with 22″ rnd bbl, square base front sight & ski jump carbine ladder rear sight. Breechblock & lockplate are dated “1873”. It is mounted in a 1-pc, walnut stock with no visible cartouche and has carved initials on the left wrist that appear to be “SH / 1914”. Left side is mounted with a sling bar & ring and the butt trap contains an early Springfield musket tool. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains 93-95% orig blue and the breechblock retains traces of case colors in the sheltered areas, being mostly a mottled silver/gray patina. Lockplate is a mottled silver/black patina. Wood is sound with a couple of bruises & numerous light nicks & scratches and retains most of an old varnish refinish. There are some small chips in front of the lockplate. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with a few spots of scattered light pitting. Pierre Renaud Collection 4-55709 JR275 (1,750-2,750)
