CUSTER BATTLE RANGE SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR CARBINE. SN 21804. Cal. 45-70. 22” rnd bbl. This has all of the proper early features including the crossed arrows and eagle on the breechblock. The lock with 1873 markings. The long wrist stock and the step rear sight graduated up to five one the right side of the base and up to twelve on the leaf. The carbine has been arsenal refinished, but the markings are still good except for the cartouche, which is partially missing. The circle “P” on the stock behind the trigger guard is still sharp. Several 21,000 SN range guns were turned in by the 7th Cav. after the battle of Little Big Horn and the rest of the 1776 campaign. Accompanying the carbine are several references to these guns including some in higher and lower ranges. CONDITION: Fine as arsenal refinish. Retaining about 80% of the blue and faint traces of the casehardening colors. Wood is smooth. Mechanically fine. 4-57175 FS270 (5,500-6,500)
