CUSTER RANGE MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. SN 33296. Standard carbine with 22″ rnd bbl, homemade copper front sight & ladder rear sight. It has “1873” dated lockplate and high arch breechblock. Sling bar has been removed and it has the correct 1873 buttplate without trapdoor, however the stock is a replacement 1884 model with cut for trap with the faint outline of a square cartouche on the left wrist. Receiver hinge is broken on the right side with an adjacent crack in the receiver. This carbine has seen very hard use associated with frontier & Indian use. CONDITION: Fair to good, as noted. Bbl retains mostly a dark blue/brown patina with some heavy crusty rust over the forestock area. Stock has several hairline cracks around the receiver & lockplate and is missing a sliver in front of the bbl band. Overall the stock gives a very worn & hard used appearance. Mechanics are fine, with the aforementioned broken hinge, very worn dark bore. 4-57029 JR526 (3,000-5,000)
