FINE CASED LEONARD PISTOL RIFLE. Cal. 36. 12″ part octagonal bbl, marked “A. LEONARD & SON. / SAXTONS RIVER.VT. / CAST – STEEL” inside an engraved border on top of the bbl. The adjustable rear sight has two leaves that fold to fit in the case. The brass stock is fancy C and S scrolls. The walnut case has cut outs for a screwdriver, a hammer, which are missing, and a nipple wrench, which is present, in the lid and compartments in the base containing a brass tube of patches, a funnel, a wooden ramrod with detachable wood handles and fixtures, an empty brass box, and a brass box containing bullets and having spout on one end. There is also a removable lid covering a bullet tray containing 156 cast balls with space for three times that many. On top of this tray is a wooden bullet starter and a brass bullet mold. This outfit is illustrated in several views in Vermont’s Gunsmiths & Gunmakers pg. 160. CONDITION: Excellent. 70% original brown on the bbl and faded casehardening colors on the hammer. Grip is fine with minor dents from loose tools in the case. Case is slightly warped, causing the lock lugs from entering the case of the lock. Externally it has minor dents and scratches. Lift out tray has two cracks half way across. Bullet mold is somewhat battered. 4-53030 FS206 (1,000-2,000)
